I was in Salt Lake City for the week and on Monday I decided to look for a sushi place for lunch. I used the in-car GPS and discovered that I was only a few blocks away from Mikado. Mikado is part of the Latitude Restaurant Group. Latitude operates several local restaurants including a Ruth's Chris including two Mikados, one downtown and one on the south side on Big Cottonwood Canyon Road.
I decided to have lunch at the south side Mikado. When I drove up to the restaurant it was so large, I automatically assumed that it was a teppanaki restaurant. When I entered I was pleased to see that Mikado is a sushi restaurant through and through. The hostess asked whether I wanted to be seated at the sushi bar, outside on the patio or at a table. I chose a table and was seated near the windows at a table with a granite (or faux granite) top. Mikado has one of the largest sushi bars I have ever seen, there were more than 20 seats and room for about a dozen sushi chefs to work.
I like the fact that Mikado had a variety of specials on a chalkboard behind the sushi bar. On the downside the specials were all rolls and all spicy, a little variety wold have been nice.
Mikado has a small selection of Japanese entrees but the majority of the menu is sushi and sashimi. Since I was there for lunch I was looking for an inexpensive combo. It took a while to find the combos on the menu. When I found them, all of the combos were expensive. I chose the sushi combo which came with miso soup and a salad.
Soup and salad seem so basic yet both were a bit strange. The miso soup came in a large bowl that was only about half full. The salad had something crispy, probably fried wonton wrapper on top. There was a mandarin orange wedge on top and the dressing was very good. The problem with the salad was that it was drenched in dressing. When I got down to the bottom of the bowl there was about half an inch of dressing left.
The sushi combo was unique in that instead of just including a California Roll, the combo comes with the roll of the day. Today's roll was a spicy shrimp Tempura roll. Not my favorite but a nice change from the ubiquitous and overused California Roll.
Mikado is the kind of sushi place that I will come back to if I am ever in the neighborhood again.
