I was in Denver teaching a class and I asked my students where to go for sushi. Of course they all recommended Sushi Den (a SushiPligrim 5 rice-bowl restaurant). I ave been to Sushi Den many times so I asked for something  different and maybe closer. One of them recommended Sushi Boat.

Sushi Boat is an unusual sushi restaurant. I have seen similar setups in California. At Sushi Boat, there is a trough about 8 inches wide that circles the sushi bar. At dinner time they float wooden boats in it and run the current carries them around the sushi bar in front of the diners. The chefs make different sushi items and load them on the boats. You take a seat at the sushi bar and simply pick items off the boats as they go buy.

I went in at lunchtime and the boats were not running. I sat at the sushi bar and the skylight gave me the light I needed to read my book. I ordered a Philadelphia roll and some tuna, salmon and mackerel nigiri. I started with a sunomono salad.

The sunomono was interesting. The octopus was thinly sliced and tender, it tasted great. Instead of the normal cucumber, the sunomono was made with daikon and had a strong onion taste. Along with the octopus, there was a single cooked shrimp. Unfortunately the shrimp tasted awful, almost spoiled.

The sushi was decent enough but not spectacular. I found the prices on the high side. Overall, I might go back if I were in the neighborhood but I would not go out of my way to eat at Sushi Boat.

Next time you are in Mississauga, please try Kumai sushi.

It is, among our japanese community, better than both Masumene and Jimbay.(not that those two are bad)
