After a long day at work I needed some sushi. I thought about going to one of my regular San Jose haunts like: Kubota in Japantown or Fuki Sushi up in Palo Alto. Instead I thought I would be adventuresome, I had seen some very good reviews for Furu-Sato so I thought I would give it a try. Furu-Sato is a large Japanese restaurant and sushi bar located its own building. The restaurant is really nice with black tile flooring and blonde wood tables.

The first thing I noticed when I walked in was the piano. On Friday and Saturday night they have live music. I came in rather late and sat at a table with my book. It was a mistake. Toshi, the sushi chef was holding court with two supplicants at the sushi bar. One of the best things about sushi bars is the chance to interact and socialize with other patrons and the sushi chefs.

It turns out that one of guys at the sushi bar was a musician who plays piano and he did an impromptu Jazz lick on the piano— awesome.

I ordered a Philadelphia roll and the ala carte tuna and giant clam sushi. Along with my order, the waitress offered me some edamame and a small order of sunomono on the house. I am really not sure whether every guest gets these extras or I got them because it was late or perhaps because there was only half an order of mirugai. In addition, I thought that the prices at Furu-Sato were reasonable.

The Philadelphia roll here was one of the best I've had. Excellent portioning not too much or too little of any ingredient. Each piece was consistent and cut to the same size. The presentation was average but the roll tasted great. The tuna was good but the mirugai was excellent. My only complaint about the food was that the mirugai was served with tobiko (flying fish roe); not my personal favorite.

Other than a rather ordinary presentation, I cannot think of a single problem with Furu-Sato — I loved it!
