Umi Sushi is located in San Diego's Shelter Island/Point Loma area. The restaurant is located near several of the local sportfishing charter operations. I visited Umi Sushi on a Monday night with a colleague. We went relatively late in the evening so we had the place almost all to our self.

We sat at the sushi bar. Umi Sushi's menu had photos of all the items. I ordered a Philadelphia roll, giant clam and tuna sushi. All of the fish was fresh and tasty. The rolls were rather average but tasted great.

One of the benefits of sitting at the sushi bar is that you get to interact with the sushi chefs. Since the place was nearly empty, we got special treatment. The sushi chefs made up a couple of special dishes and we got to be guinea pigs. One was tuna with Japanese mayonaise spinach and a spicy hot sauce.

On the way out, I noticed that they had a tub full of trainining chopsticks. Wooden chopsticks with a rubber piece joining the ends. Thus you could use them with out having to worry about dropping one. I'll have to get some for my kids.

Umi Sushi is the kind of sushi restaurant I enjoy — consistently good and moderately priced.

I have been to Japan eight times. I have eaten in sushi bars and restaurants all over the world. Umi Sushi is UNDOUBTEDLY the WORST in service I have EVER experienced. I've been there three (3) times, to give them the benefit of the doubt. To say they are rude would be an understatement. The quality of the sushi is only fair. Try the sushi bar and restaurant on Liberty Station instead.
